About
This is a blog by David Osler, a London-based journalist and author. It aims to cover current British and international politics, economics, industrial relations and historical questions from an unorthodox Marxist standpoint. From time to time, I also write about various other enthusiasms, especially jazz, blues and 1970s rock music, or review books I have recently read.
I am a member of the Labour Party and Labour Representation Committee, but not uncritical of either. Sometimes I plug events or causes, but this blog is not intended to play a broad ‘noticeboard for the left’ role. All opinions expressed on this website are mine alone and do not represent the stance of any political organisation. The only exception comes in the shape of invited guest posts, which are the responsibility of the person putting his or her name to them.
Comments are invited from across the spectrum, including those on the centre and the right who have constructive things to say about the issues under debate. My comments policy is probably one of the most libertarian found anywhere in the UK political blogosphere, because I believe in freedom of speech and the healthy clash of ideas. But I reserve the right to delete mindless abuse or anything that falls foul of Britain’s ridiculous laws on defamation.
Talking of which, I am currently facing a libel action brought by Johanna Kaschke, a Conservative Party activist who by her own admission was detained on suspicion of terrorism in her native West Germany in the 1970s. You can read an outline of the case here.
Copies of my 2002 book ‘Labour Party plc: New Labour as a Party of Business’ are still available here.
