DEAN offers a parody of my writing style when he argues in the comments box on the post below:

Oh I can’t wait for Dave’s article in response to the mass terror by Israel.

How cowardly it is to enter an aid ship with fully armed commandos and start killing people.

How the only tenable attitude for the left is one of abhorrance towards reactionary colonial secular settler states backed by a racist ideology. We have just been accorded a small-scale preview of what will happen if such currents are ever allowed to prevail.

And guess what? Although I appreciate that Dean is trying to be sarcastic, this does in fact encapsulate my initial response to first reports of the Israeli attack on the Gaza Aid convoy. Regular readers will know that I am not a Zionist and regard the establishment of a democratic secular state as the only plausible solution to the Israel/Palestine situation.

I will offer fuller reflections in due course, although I have other immediate business to attend to for the next few hours. In the meantime, treat this post as an opportunity to express your opinions on these dreadful events, to which condemnation is the only appropriate attitude.

    Those of us who support Israel’s right to exist within pre-1967 borders and who reject the thinly-disguised anti-semitism (cloaked as “anti-zionism”) of much of the “left”‘s hostility to Israel, have a particular duty and responsibility to condemn this massacre. It is – quite simply – indefensible.

    Though when Denham is so unequivocal in his condemnation you just know what a publicity own goal this is and how potentially damaging it is to the Israeli state.

    Though I would argue this attack is not out of character at all and the crimes against the Palestinians is a continuing one that gets very little press among the pro Zionist left.

    I’ll put that down to barley thinly disguised anti-semitism.

    More likely they’ll be in mourning for murdered friends. You on the other hand seem intent to score several `own goals’ of your own. Your outrage is clearly not aimed at the outrage itself and the brutal slaying of people trapped on a boat in international waters but the damaging political consequences of it for the perpetrators.

    To be fair to Jim Denham, though he is a pro zionist pig, he has actually condemned the attacks!

    These attacks are realy unprecedented. Even for a terrorist state such as Israel this takes some beating. Even North Korea would baulk at such action. If this was designed to intimidate and weaken the Gaza aid movement I think it will actually strenghen it greatly. Talk about idiocy and criminality going hand in hand.

    I think Obama will prove to be as useless in his condemnation as he has been in dealing with the oil slick. But why should that surpise anyone?

    Those who can be bothered to do, say, an hour’s research can and will establish that there are plenty of shipments of all sorts of commodities into Gaza from Israel and from Egypt.

    In the case of Egypt, there are also the tunnels from Egyptian territory into Gaza. Some are large enough to transport a gleaming brand new car or adult cattle to be slaughtered for Feast Days. There is plenty of Egyptian collusion in this enterprise, of course.*

    The flotilla was a propaganda ploy which succeeded beyond its sponsors most optimistic hopes.

    The appalling Bibi and the nincompoops who report to him have handed the enemies of Israel a PR triumph of stunning magnitude.

    As of this minute, I don’t know the nationality / nationalities of those who were killed by the Israelis. If they were, indeed, those who were singing songs about the joys of martyrdom one can only hope that their souls, if there are such entities as souls, are in Paradise, if such a place exists.

    * Official salaries in Egypt are so low that someone who failed to make a few piastres on the side if offered the chance to do so would be thought a total idiot.

    This action yet again shows the contempt that Israel has for international opinion. They have shown time and time again that they will do whatever they want to without any regard to how much it is condemned. All the condemnation after inflicted massive civilian casualties by attacking Gaza had no effect. All the condemnation after they used identity theft to allow them to carry out assassinations had no effect, why should now be any different?

    If the rest of the world do not approve of Isreali actions they need to show it with action, as it has already been shown that words have no effect.

    The problem, JG, is with how Israel defines “its people”. Israel is a state not for the people who live there or who come from there but according to itself it is a state for Jews. How does Israel go about defending those it (and Jim Denham) identifies as “its people” when the overwhelming majority of “its people” neither live there nor come from there?
