GILLIAN Duffy does not come across as one of life’s natural decaf skinny latte drinkers. Welcome to the core vote, Mr Brown.
The nation could hardly help noticing your visible distaste at exposure to opinions at variance with your own. You certainly are not used to that sort of thing from the Parliamentary Labour Party or the hand-picked audiences at invite-only election rallies. It really is most unfair to expect you to have to put up with such unbecoming insubordination.
But Labour supporters who go out canvassing for real – rather than float around indown at heel areas for short periods of time in the company of television crews – meet people like Mrs Duffy all the time.
The ideas they espouse are not always analogous to those current in polite New Labour circles. What is it with the actually existing working class? Can’t the bastards just get with the programme, or something?
The problem is that when jobs are hard to come by, and social housing can hardly be had at all, many people look for the most obvious explanation.
That’s why immigration is a big issue on the doorstep, and increasingly so. Sometimes people get straight to the point. Heck, I have even come across cases of second generation Asian immigrants complaining that Britain lets in too many bloody immigrants.
At other times, you can see in the whites of the electorate’s eyes that they want to say something on the topic, but hold off for fear of being thought racist. It’s not that they are proto-BNPers, or even ‘bigots’ in the proper sense of the word. But they do want answers to their concerns, and Labour stopped providing them years ago.
We try to reason with them, we really do. But when all the talk from people like you and Phil Woolas is of British jobs for British workers and points-based schemes, it isn’t easy for us.
This is where the politics of accommodation to Paul Dacre logically terminates. If you are really concerned to fight mild racism of the sort evinced by Duffy, Mr Brown, a good first step would be a concerted effort to undermine its material base.

As an aside he’d have actually gained some cred if he’d just said ‘bog off you bigoted old sow and read something other than the Daily Mail!’ – at least some balls and honesty would have caused less damage than the toe-curling grovelling that later occured.
I really feel for Mrs Duffy, she was is like Boxer the carthorse in Anmal Farm. Boxer gave a life of devotion to the other animals and believed in the Revolution and his recompense was to be carted off to the Knackers’ Yard. She needs to get with the swing. Labour doesn’t need people like her toiling away in public service jobs, upholding oldfashioned workingclass values: Labour wants snazzy, highly mobile people who understand about the need to wring every penny of proft out of the population and to make everything efficient by privatising it and rubbishing the old ways. I have come to realise that the only way to deal with it all is to say Old Britain is gone, this is Modern Britain. It’s not the same. I don’t want to go all moralistic, at the end of the day it’s political. I’ve argued in other places that the only answer is revolution in the ‘Third World’, but it seems a long time in the making.
If you support unlimited immigration and weak trades unions – and Nu-Labour supports both – then you support cutting the wages. Stage one involves getting those crabby bastards out of office next week.
What comes next? We need to come together around a raft of ideas, and the big one is that if you want the support of the council estates then you go for social conservatism married with economic radicalism.
The woman is a bigot, and rather than being caught offguard saying it in private Brown and Labour should have spent more time defending immigration rather than peddling soft versions of BNP or Tory arguments.
The sad thing is that many racists will have voted Labour over the years because it was in their class interests to do so, but now this interest has disappeared these votes could find a much more malign home.

At the risk of stating the VERY obvious yet again, there are two main types of non-Anglosphere ‘immigrants’ who’ve arrived in the last decade:
Those from the EU accession countries who are industrious and adaptable; thousands upon thousands from Poland and other EU countries. Sadly, their presence in such enormous numbers has pushed wage rates in trades like plastering and blocklaying close to the minimum wage. On the other hand, most Poles and so on regard themselves as temporary sojourners sending most of their wages home, not as permanent immigrants.
Then there are those from hellholes of the Third World like Somalia and Ethiopia. Many but not all are asylum-seekers, successful or not. Depending on which set of figures you believe, at least 70% of these people live on benefits of one kind or another. They are unlikely to prove useful or valued citizens, having few visible skills. They seem to have every intention of staying.
Today’s ‘Independent’ has a heart-warming story of how the retiring head of Barnado’s successfully prevailed upon Tony Blair to let over 60 HIV-positive youngsters from Malawi and other African countries – and their family members – remain in Britain, so that they could receive appropriate palliative treatment for years to come at the expense of the UK taxpayer.

Perhaps Mrs Duffy was lamenting the socialization of the costs of accession states immimigration whilst the profits accrue to the boss class and property-owning rentiers…specifically, the cost and availability of housing, increased pressure on services, the ongoing decline in the availability of work and the reduced value of what remains.
An essential quid pro quo for mass immigration ought to include massive redistribution and commensurately increased health services, social housing and schooling funded by severe taxation of increased boss-class profits. The balance should make its way straight into workers’ pockets – which the fucking Labour Party is supposed to do anyway.

There is no utility in debating whether immigration is good or bad. The people who argue that it is good tend to be the ones who also argue that unions should remain weak. Ergo they support cutting the wages. Hardly a leftist position.
Basically you need to control the supply of labour as at least a stop gap measure so as to keep wages high. You can do that via immigration controls, strong unions or a mixture of the two.
The left needs to get back to first principles: it’s about economic security and control over the work process. All the rest is just old wank put out by Trotscum who act in the boss man’s name.
