This ‘joke’ map of London is doing the email rounds in the City this morning. Very droll.

It’s not only droll, but incredibly artistic too. Has Saatchi bought it yet? A nice use of pen and ink, watercolour, and some pre-ink pencil outlining. Craftmanship at its best. Geographically it’s rubbish, so it won’t have been done by any ex-cartographer who’s winging it in the square mile, assuming there are such people. I have a similar (more accurate) map somewhere, it’s called “A Social Atlas of London”, published by the GLC in the early 1980s. The main difference (apart from the geographic accuracy) was that “very rich” and “losers” were portrayed not in words, but via piecharts, which enable the viewer to diffentiate somewhat more than this ultra-left “bourgeoisie”/”proletariat” model portrayed here.
Well, at least they’re honest.
Actually that map is pretty much the way most people in England outside the M25 sees it as well. although without the little red circle.
It’s, as you might expect, also a much less witty and artistically accomplished take on the famous Steinberg view of the USA, nay the world, from ‘The New Yorker.’ See

I’ve no doubt Mitt Romney has got his copy and had his chuckle as well.
